Public Sector

Useful sources of information on climate change adaptation for the Public Sector.

Local Authorities

The East Midlands Local Authorities' approach to adaptation is covered in the other sections of this Resource, particularly the sections on Current Vulnerability, Future Climate, and Adaptation Process and Action. Use the menu on the right to navigate. See also the Planning to Adapt project.

A publication by the LGiU, "Getting ready for a changing climate: supporting Councillors' leadership role in adaptation" is useful for increasing high-level understanding of, and support for, adaptation to climate change.

Emergency Planning

A workshop summary published by the Emergency Planning Society, UKCIP and the Nottingham Declaration Partnership in 2009, looks at how emergency planning - and particularly Local Resilience Forums (LRFs) - may need to respond to climate change. LRFs already plan for severe weather, but the climate change projections suggest that in future LRFs may need to consider how long term changes in climate might affect their capacity to respond. The workshop summary offers some initial thoughts on this.

Fire and Rescue

A report published by the Department for Communities and Local Government in 2006, titled "The effects of climate change on Fire and Rescue Services in the UK", combines climate change scenarios with statistical analysis of extreme weather events to provide an evidence base to support decision making on Fire and Rescue Service climate change issues.

Increasingly Fire and Rescue Services are including climate change adaptation in their sustainable development strategies or are producing specific adaptation plans. Some examples are as follows:
