Climate East Midlands was pleased to support the Nottingham People's Climate March on 21st September 2014, one of over 2,500 such events in 150 countries around the world. The timing of this unprecedented series of events was to bring attention to the United Nations Climate Summit in New York, starting on 23rd September, where UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has invited global leaders to bring new commitments to action. The hope is that by next year, the UN will then be able to broker a legally binding global deal to restrict greenhouse gas emissions and therefore limit the extent of potentially dangerous climate change.

The Nottingham People's Climate march, which attracted around 200 people, was organised by protest group Frack Free Notts and went on a route around the city centre ending up in Old Market Square. Those who spoke at different points along the route included conservationist Kay Haw, Rushcliffe Borough Councillor Richard Mallender, Nottingham City Councillor Michael Edwards and green campaigner and former Member of Parliament for Nottingham South Alan Simpson. Mike Peverill from Climate East Midlands also spoke - about the proud history of action on climate change in Nottingham and the tangible benefits that are now evident (including the highly regarded public transport system). He also mentionjed the work of the Partnership in supporting action across the East Midlands by councils, businesses, schools and others, highlighted the progress that's underway in cutting emissions and building local resilience and highlighted the importance of such events in maintaining public awareness.
