SCoRE (Schools Collaboration on Resource Efficiency)
The largest proportion of an upper tier authorities’ carbon footprint is usually the school estate, (typically 60%) but the responsibility for energy and resource use lies with individual schools. Local authorities are responsible for the carbon emissions from their schools under the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) Energy Efficiency Scheme. This provides potential financial liabilities to councils, which is a key issue for them.
The SCoRE pilot developed a series of toolkits that were trialled. A summary of the experience and lessons learned from the resources can be downloaded here. You can also download a film made by Nottingham City during the project... that demonstrates that saving energy can be fun! http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=mZSH_ZsYRkg
Following on from our pilot, the Carbon Trust have developed, and are developing, a number of resources for schools around energy efficiency and carbon reduction. More resources will be added over time, so come back and check for updates here: http://www.carbontrust.co.uk/cut-carbon-reduce-costs/public-sector/pages/public-sector-resources.aspx#SC
